Nukik Corporation welcomes the Kivalliq Inuit Association’s Board of Director’s in-principle support for meaningful Inuit equity participation in the Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link (KHFL), a transformative Inuit-led infrastructure project that would connect Nunavut to Canada’s electricity and telecommunications backbone for the first time. As Canada looks to advance major projects that strengthen economic security and sovereignty, the KHFL demonstrates how Indigenous-led ownership and meaningful equity participation can create lasting value for Inuit while delivering nation-building infrastructure for all Canadians.
The KHFL is Inuit-led economic infrastructure designed to power sustainable prosperity, improve energy security, strengthen sovereignty, and create long-term opportunity for Kivallirmiut and Nunavummiut. The nation-building project will deliver clean, reliable Manitoba energy and fibre-optic connectivity to the Kivalliq region through a fully Canadian-owned and operated corridor. The project will reduce imported diesel dependency, strengthen Arctic sovereignty, improve regional connectivity, and unlock long-term economic development opportunities for Inuit communities.
KIA’s support reflects its long-standing recognition of the KHFL as critical to the economic, social, environmental, and strategic future of the Kivalliq region and Nunavut as a whole. The project would establish the first infrastructure connection between Nunavut and the rest of Canada, creating a new economic corridor between the Kivalliq region and northern Manitoba. It would also support major regional priorities, including Canada’s first Inuit Nunangat University, and Sakku Innovative Building Solutions (SIBS), Nunavut’s first manufacturing facility in Arviat, along with strategic defence assets in Churchill and Rankin Inlet, housing, mining, businesses, and community growth.
